Why deworm your pet pig? Is it necessary?

The short answer is, yes. Pigs should be dewormed on a regular basis to keep them healthy and happy.

According to the American Mini Pig Association (AMPA) pigs are susceptible to contracting both internal & external parasites quite easily. Pigs can contract parasites from soil, grazing, other pets, other pigs, eating bugs, including earth worms or mealworms and so on. Read the full AMPA article here.

So even if your pet pig is mostly indoors, they are still exposed to parasites that can cause mites and internal parasites resulting in costly veterinary visits.

How Often Should I Deworm My Pet Pig?

Deworming every six months is what most people in the pig community would agree upon. Once in the spring and once in the fall. If you live in an especially warm climate or if your pigs live in an environment with mixed animals such as dogs, chickens, goats or horses, it’s recommended to deworm every 4 months.

How Do I Deworm My Pig? What do I Use?

The easiest way to deworm you pet pig is with an oral wormer such as Ivermectin Horse Paste. There’s no need to buy an injectable worming medicine.

Administering this orally is as easy as putting a pea -sized amount of the paste onto a cracker or a bread, or any one of your piggy’s favorite treats and feeding it to them!

Ivermectin treats, mites, lice, and a variety of internal parasites so you will most likely only need this one broad spectrum oral dewormer for the lifetime of your pet pig.

Resources & Further Reading

For more reading about your pet pig’s health and wellness needs including vaccinations and dosages, I highly recommend the following article from Halbert Farm and the above mentioned article from the American Mini Pig Association.

Administering an oral dewormer like Ivermectin Horse Paste is easy, but remembering when your little piggy’s next worming isn’t always as easily done. Don’t forget to print your free worming and vaccination schedules so you don’t ever skip a worming for your beloved pet pig!
